Arlie Scott

Professor Arlie Scott, 92, of Murray, KY died Friday, February 10, 2012 at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, KY.
Professor Scott was born in Webster County Kentucky near Onton, Kentucky on December 1, 1919. He was the youngest child of the late John James Scott and late Nancy Elizabeth Holmes Scott. He is survived by two daughters, Jayne Katherine Powell and husband Michael of Rancho Mirage, California and Carolyn Elizabeth Pitt and husband Benny of Benton, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Sonya Elizabeth Pitt Larka, Scott Ray Pitt and Laura Jayne Fitzgerald Shinohara; as well as two great grandchildren, Courtney Elizabeth Larka and Madeline Jayne Shinohara.
Professor Scott grew up on a general livestock farm and graduated from Onton High School in 1938. He joined the Army on October 8, 1940 and spent five years in military service. He was wounded and taken P.O.W. on December 6, 1942 near Tunis in North Africa and spent two years and four and one half months as a German P.O.W. Professor Scott was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was liberated by the Russians and separated from the Army on August 30, 1945. Professor Scott married now the late Jayne Maxine Price on September 9, 1945, the daughter of the late H.B. Price and late Mary Jayne Bilbray Price. He entered the University of Kentucky on September 21, 1945 and graduated with a Master of Science Degree in Agriculture in the spring of 1949. He came to Murray State University to teach Animal Science and Agriculture English in the fall of 1949. He retired June 30, 1984 after 35 years of uninterrupted service to Murray State University and with 41 years in the Teacher Retirement System.
Professor Arlie Scott either received, served, or held positions in the following: served on the State and Calloway County United Way Boards for six years, was granted the title of "Duke of Paducah", Honorary Commissioner of Agriculture, a Kentucky Colonel, served on the State Extension Council four years and Local and Area Extension Councils for numerous years, served as Vice – President of State 4-H Extension Council and held all offices in Local and Area 4-H Councils, Treasurer of the Calloway County 4-H Council and Calloway Extension District Board for many years, he was a certified Meat and Animal Live Stock Judge and has judged county fairs, steer shows, sheep shows and hog shows all over Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee and parts of Indiana and had the privilege of judging the Kentucky Angus Sweepstakes Show and Sale and gained the nickname "Here Comes the Judge", served on Commissioner of Agriculture's Livestock Advisory Council, he stared as the first grader of first graded hog sale in Kentucky at Mayfield, Kentucky and while grading the hogs trained a hog grader to take his position as he couldn't devote the time needed because of his teaching career, he graded the lamb sale in Mayfield, Kentucky and judged the Sheep Show in Evansville, Indiana, served as the director on the University of Kentucky Agriculture Alumni Association, served as director of Alumni for Calloway County to the Purchase Area Chapter for many years and was President of the Chapter, he is a Life Member of the University of Kentucky Agriculture Alumni Association and Murray State University Alumni Association, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Purchase Area Chapter and the Life Time Achievement Award from the Purchase Area Alumni Chapter, he received the 55 Year Award as Friend of 4-H, served on the State Board of Kentucky Friends of 4-H, received the EPSILON SIGMA PHI award as National Friend of Extension (one of three in the nation), received the Life Time Achievement Award for 4-H, received State Friend of Extension Award, he established the Agriculture Field Day at Murray State University and Co-Sponsored the ALPHA ZETA Chapter at Murray State University, established Alpha Gamma Rho and formed the corporation in order to take title to property and purchased the Beale estate which is now home to Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho and he is number one on the Charter that granted the Chapter Official Status, in 2007 he was granted Murray State University School of Agriculture Support Award, a Charter member of the Murray Kiwanis Club in which he was chartered in 1961 with 45 years of perfect attendance and served in all offices and on the Board of Directors for 44 years and was twice Lt. Governor of Division #15, he received numerous awards from the Kiwanis and is a Life member of the Kiwanis International, he was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Murray where he served as the past president of his Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home with Bro. Randy McClure and Rev. Jim Stahler officiating. Burial to follow in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville, Kentucky at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 13, 2012 after 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
