Mrs. Betty Duvall, age 90, of Murray, Kentucky died peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Murray Calloway County Hospital, surrounded by loved ones.
Betty was born on November 15, 1924 in Detroit Michigan to Arnold and Augusta Lumm who immigrated from Germany in early 1920's. Betty served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps from 1948-1952. She was stationed at Madigan General Hospital in Fort Lewis, Washington during the Korean War where the U.S. soldiers were flown in for treatment and recovery. She also served at Fort Riley Army Base in Kansas and at Percy Jones Army Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan where she met her husband, Samuel Duvall. Her military service was a special time in her life as she often said it was a privilege to care for the wounded and her respect for the soldiers never faded.
In 1951, she married Samuel Duvall in Detroit, Michigan, and then later moved to Fruitport, Michigan to raise her family of three children. In 1976, the family moved to Murray, Kentucky where she assisted in her husband's dental office, as well as volunteered for many years with the Calloway County Humane Society. Her love of animals shown through in her writings published under the "Humanely Speaking" portion of the Murray Ledger and Times Newspaper and her involvement in the pet therapy program with her dog, "Honey". Betty also enjoyed singing in the church choir at the First Congregational Church in Fruitport, Michigan, the First United Methodist Church and the First Presbyterian Church, in Murray, Kentucky. Her father and many others told her she had the voice of an angel.
Betty is survived by her children, Joanne Ellis Duvall of Murray, Kentucky and Marianne Scott and husband Roger of Murray, Kentucky; as well as her cherished grandchildren, Emily Scott and Eric Ellis and wife Miranda.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel V. Duvall, who died on January 24, 2015; and by one son, Paul Duvall.
Private graveside services will be held in Fruitport, Michigan at a later date. The J.H. Churchill Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.
