Betty Lee Barber Gore, 83, of Murray, died Thursday, January 17 at her home. She was born on March 24, 1929 to the late M.U. Barber and Editha Cook Barber in Detroit, MI and grew up in Mayfield, KY. She graduated from Mayfield High School in 1947 and attended Murray State Teachers College. After graduating in 1951, Mrs. Gore taught at Morton High School in Morton, Il and Madisonville High School in Madisonville, KY. In 1975 she earned a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from MSU.
She retired from teaching in 1989 with 23 years of service, the last 12 with the Calloway County School System as a Kindergarten teacher at Southwest Elementary. She also taught Sigma Kindergarten, Lutheran Pre-School and Kindergarten, Murray State University Kindergarten and Pre-School
Mrs. Gore was active in scouting having served as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and as a Troop Leader, Day Camp Director and Neighborhood Chairman for the Girl Scouts. She had been a member of the Sigma Department of the Murray Woman's Club, Kappa Delta Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Calloway County Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the First Christian Church where she taught Sunday School, was a member of the CWF, served on the Church Board and as Deacon, and was a member of the Christian Builder's Sunday School Class and Monday Night Bible Study.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Bailey Gore, an infant daughter, and her sister Nina Barber.
She is survived by one son, David Gore and wife Michele of Richmond, KY; two daughters, Emily Kennedy and husband Mark of Murray, and Betsy Bond and husband Doug of Pembroke, KY; five grandchildren; Katie Gore Lewellen of Richmond, Kentucky and Anna Gore of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Nathan Kennedy, Kyle Kennedy and Bailey Kennedy of Murray; two great-grandchildren, Miranda Lewellen of Richmond and Kaylen Kennedy of Murray.
Funeral service will be held 3:30 pm Sunday, January 20, 2013 in the chapel of the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home. Rev. Dr. Ruth Ragovin and Dr. David Roos will officiate with burial to follow in the Murray City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the funeral home.
