Mrs. Betty Lowry, age 91, of Murray, Kentucky died on Wednesday, June 03, 2015 at Hickory Woods Retirement Center in Murray, Kentucky.
Betty was born on November 15, 1923 in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late Vaun Chevaliar Hamilton and Murtel Peterson Hamilton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. C.C. Lowry, sister, Dorothy Hamilton, son in law, Bill Abernathy.
Betty was a Civic leader in Murray, Kentucky; she was a member of the Woman's club, the Kentucky Federation of Woman's club, West Kentucky Mental Health, Murray Country club. She worked actively on the Murray City Council, Murray Civic Music Association, and was the first woman appointed to serve on the Kentucky council for Higher Education. She was also the first chairwoman of the United States March of Dimes from 1971-1974. Betty was also a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Conie Lowry Abernathy of Covington, Louisiana, one son, Duane Hamilton Lowry of Florence, Kentucky, one grandchild, Sloan Lowry Abernathy and wife Dial of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2015, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home, Reverend Jim Stahler will officiate, and entombment will follow in the Murray Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 6, 2015 from 1-2p.m. at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home.
