Mrs. Brownie Sue Wilkerson, age 95, of Troy, Tennessee, formerly of Murray, Kentucky, died Sunday, February 10, 2019 at Magnolia Place in Union City, Tennessee.
Mrs. Wilkerson was born on May 23, 1923 to the late Harvey Lynn Parker and Johnnie (Farless) Parker. Sue grew up in the Penny Community in Calloway County, Kentucky and later married James Clifton Wilkerson and were married for 52 years.
For many years Sue was an active member of the Union Grove Church of Christ until she moved to North Carolina to be near her daughter and later to Tennessee with her daughter's family. At the time of her death she was a member of the Troy Church of Christ in Troy, Tennessee. Sue was active in supporting her husband on their family farm in Penny while also working as a telephone operator for Bell South. Before Sue's retirement she worked at Lerman's Department Store. She used her seamstress skills to make many beautiful heirloom quilts, and provided burial gowns made from discarded wedding dresses for premature infants. There were many benefactors of her sewing skills ranging from nursing home patients to cancer patients.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wilkerson was preceded in death by her husband, James Clifton Wilkerson, a WWII veteran, who died on February 12, 1997 at the age of 82; her seven siblings: infant sister, Mary Parker, Hazel Parker Tutt, Jack Parker, Frank Parker, Lynn Parker, Ann Parker Darnell, and Ruby Jo Parker Leslie.
Mrs. Wilkerson is survived by one daughter, Jenny Newberry (Ron) of Rives, Tennessee; two granddaughters, Kim Newberry Sutler (Troy Doug, III) of Bridgewater, Massachusetts and Monica Renee Newberry of Raleigh, North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews; as well as Brennan and Brileigh Spain who loved her as "Granny Sue."
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 15, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home with Ron Newberry, Johnny Parker, and Dan Leslie officiating. Burial will follow in the Murray City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2019 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Troy Church of Christ in Troy, Tennessee. There will also be a visitation held on Friday, February 15, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. until funeral hour at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home.
