Dr. Buford Ray Anderson, age 84, of Murray, Kentucky, died on Friday, March 22, 2019, at his home. Buford was born in Burkley, Kentucky on March 30, 1934, to the late Carl Anderson and Oma Thomason Anderson. From an early age Buford spent many days in the woods and river bottom hunting and fishing. There he found God.
Buford served in the Signal Corp. 68th Special Forces, U.S. Army from August 1954 – August 1957. He returned to Murray State College and received his B.S. in 1960. He received his M.S. from Oklahoma State University in 1962, and his Ph.D. from the University of Mississippi in 1974. Buford loved learning and enjoyed a 37-year career as a Professor of Physics at Murray State University.
Buford's memory will be lovingly cherished by his wife of 55 years, Sharon Carter Anderson; his sons, Carl Anderson of Decatur, Alabama and Michael Anderson and wife Alicia of Long Beach, Mississippi; four grandchildren, Ashten Anderson of Oxford, Mississippi, Brandon Anderson of West Point, New York, Amanda Anderson of Long Beach, Mississippi, and Blake Anderson of Long Beach, Mississippi; Also surviving are two sisters, Lou Etta Sweet and Peggy Nieschlag; as well as two brothers, James Anderson and Amos Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Buford was a member of First United Methodist Church of Murray, and a member of his beloved fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. Buford loved life and lived it well.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, March 29, 2019, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home with Dr. Rick Dye and Rev. Max Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Arlington, Kentucky Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., on Friday, March 29, 2019, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home.
