Dr. Carl S. Rogers, 77, of Murray, KY died, Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Centennial Hospital in Nashville, TN. Dr. Rogers was born in Fort Worth, TX on June 10, 1932 to the late William C. and Frances K. Rourk Rogers.
Dr. Rogers graduated from Polytechnic High School in Fort Worth, and then attended Austin College in Sherman, TX. Dr. Rogers later attended the University of North Texas in Denton, TX, and there received the Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in voice. He also earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in voice performance from the University of Illinois, Urbana, Illinois. For 27 years Dr. Rogers was the associate professor of music at Murray State University, where he taught applied voice, the history of music, and other related subjects. For some years he was chair of the vocal-choral unit at Murray State. He was a baritone, and performed in recitals, opera, and oratorio. He served as director of the adult choir at the First Presbyterian Church in Mayfield, KY for many years.
After his retirement as a teacher of music, Dr. Rogers attended Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, TX and received the Master of Divinity degree and following his ordination he served Presbyterian churches in Kentucky, Missouri, Texas, and Illinois.
He was a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Society for American Music, and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians.
Addition to his parents, Dr. Rogers was preceded in death by his son, Lynn Carl Rogers. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Rogers of Murray.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, May 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Murray, Ky.
