With the help of a flight surgeon friend he transferred to the 43rd Bombardment Group, the 65th Bombardment Squadron and flew 32 missions in B 24 bombers without regular pilot’s wings. He received the Soldiers Medal for heroism, the Silver Star, our third highest medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, and numerous Air Medals. He was sent home due to injuries in late 1944 and shortly thereafter was summoned to the Pentagon where an aide to Lt. Gen.
