Charlie L. Burkeen, 90, passed peacefully at home on September 20, 2023.
Born on April 2, 1933, in Calloway County to the late John David and Pernecy Garland Burkeen, Mr. Burkeen graduated from New Concord High School and served his country aboard the newly commissioned USS Saratoga. While the Navy offered opportunity to see the world, he longed for home soil. When the aircraft carrier docked in the Port of New York, Mr. Burkeen traveled to Central Park to feel grass beneath bare feet. Returning home at the conclusion of his service, Mr. Burkeen pursued a passion for farming and grew a business from which he never wished to retire. He often declared work as his hobby and passed on pride in a job well done.
Mr. Burkeen and Oleta Elkins married on April 3, 1959, a wedding day book-ended by their birthdays. Faith, family and friends were the central themes of their lives. He sometimes joined in her love of travel, notably winter getaways to Seaside, Florida, adventures in Alaska, and frequent visits with their daughter and son-in-law. Mr. Burkeen's New Providence community filled a special place in his heart, especially after Ms. Burkeen passed in 2016. In his final months on earth, he was joyous and thankful for a blessed life.
Mr. Burkeen is survived by his daughter Kelli Parsons, son-in-law D. Scott Parsons, beloved brother Larry Weatherford, cherished nieces and nephews and countless friends.
