Mr. Edward Shroat was born in 1926 to Jefferson and Vena (Page) Shroat in Murray, KY, only a few years prior to the Great Depression which placed him in a class of Depression babies.
He attended Murray High School as an average student, but excelled in sports. He was captain of the football team in 1944 and he received eight scholarship letters during his three years of football and two years of basketball. He was inducted into the Murray High School Football Hall of Fame in 2004. He was also elected as most popular student and best all-around in his class.
After high school he served in the Armed Forces for two years under the rank of Staff Sergeant. Mr. Shroat attended Denver University for four years working at Pacific Fruit and Produce Company to supplement his income for college.
After college, he went to work for Union Carbide in Paducah, Kentucky, where he worked for 17 years at the Atomic Plant before resigning in 1967 as area supervisor.
His career at this point turned to a real estate developer, where he built duplex housing for rent and commercial office spaces. After retiring completely he entered into a project of travelling around the world four times. After his travels he settled in Hawaii for ten years. When he developed neuropathy due to diabetes, his health required him to return to his home in Murray, where he passed away at the age of 88 years.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Jefferson Daviess (JD) Shroat, Carl Everett Shroat, and Franklin Eric Shroat; and by his two sisters, Bertha Neil Dunn and Marjorie Shroat Huie Dunn.
He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Shroat Laing; and two grandsons, Justin and Christopher Laing all of Little Rock, Arkansas.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home with Rev. Kerry Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in the Murray City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until service hour (2:00p.m.) at the funeral home.
