James Willard Dunn

September 3, 1940 — August 10, 2024

Boynton Beach, Florida

James Willard Dunn, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, accomplished pilot, and beloved husband, passed away on August 10, 2024, in Boynton Beach, Florida, at the age of 83.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela Stillwell Dunn of Boynton Beach, Florida, a stepdaughter Amanda Kay Olson of Raleigh, North Carolina and two brothers, John Howard Dunn of Covington, Georgia and William Lyn Dunn of Murray, Kentucky. Additionally, he is survived by one nephew, Stacy Howard Dunn of Mooresville, North Carolina, and one niece, Stephanie Lorrain Dunn Blair of Hoschton, Georgia.

Born on September 3, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, to George Willard Dunn and Dorothy Abels Dunn, James was raised in Calloway County, Kentucky. His early years were marked by a love of flight that would shape his entire life. After graduating from New Concord High School, he attended Murray State University where he served the ROTC program and was drafted into the Army, setting his path to becoming a military flight officer.

James went on to serve his country with distinction as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War and later flying the East-West German border in furtherance of his Army service. After the military, James continued to pursue his love of aviation, flying for a commuter airline before taking on the role of chief pilot for the South Florida Water Management District, where he served until his retirement. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to found Dunn’s Aerial Photography, a successful business that provided services throughout Florida for over 40 years.

James was a long-time resident of the Wellington Aero Club residential community in Florida, where he was known and loved by many. In his later years, he and his wife, Pamela Stillwell Dunn, made their home in the Valencia Sound retirement community in Boynton Beach.

James was a loving husband, devoted stepfather, and an inspirational brother. He was a man of determination and vision, always setting the bar high and encouraging those around him to do the same. He leaves behind a legacy of service, adventure, and love. James will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
