John Winter

September 21, 1921 — March 26, 2015

John Campbell "Jack" Winter (b. Sep 21, 1921) served in WWII as an officer of the 724th Field Artillery Battalion, 69th Infantry Division, the first American division to link up with the Russians. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Upon return to the US he rejoined his young wife and son in Lake Charles, LA and re-entered Louisiana State University where he earned his BM degree in piano performance. At the end of that year their second son was born and the young family moved north to Ann Arbor where Jack earned the master's degree in music from the University of Michigan.

Armed with additional study at Juilliard and at Trinity College of Music, London, he began teaching at Murray State Teachers College in the fall of 1948 where he taught piano and organ for 31 years, until he retired from Murray State University as Professor and acting dean of the College of Creative Expression. He collaborated with factory representatives and with Beatrice Farrell in designing the Casavant and Wicks pipe organs at MSU and at the First United Methodist Church of Murray. A founder, he served as president of Murray Civic Music Association: president of Kentucky Music Teachers Association; and vice president, Southern Division of Music Teachers National Association. He was named Distinguished Professor in 1977 by MSU Alumni Association.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Norinne V. Winter, brother F.C. Winter, Jr., and sister Ida Winter Clarke.

He is survived by his sister, Emma Lillian Plauché (Mrs. S.W., Jr.), Gainesville, GA; three children, John C. Winter, Jr. and wife Melanie, Huntsville, AL, Noré Vincent Winter and wife Molly, Boulder, CO, and Mary E. Winter, Versailles, KY; three grandchildren Jennifer L. Clark and husband Bobby, Murfreesboro, TN, Honorine K. Daniels and husband Bill, Huntsville, AL, Lily A. Winter, New York, NY; and four great grandchildren Rebecca L. Clark, Jessica A. Clark, John M. Daniels, and William Michael Daniels, Jr.

There are no plans for a memorial service at this time. Memorial contributions may be made to one's favorite charitable organization.
