Joseph Lee Rose

Dr. Joseph Lee Rose, age 89, of Murray, Kentucky died on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at the Murray-Calloway County Hospital.

Born in Greenville, Kentucky on November 19, 1928 to the late Julius Rose and Ona (Osburn) Rose, Dr. Rose grew up at the Masonic Widow's and Orphan's Home in Louisville and finished high school in Greenville, Kentucky. An Army veteran, he served during the Korean War at White Sands Proving Grounds. Returning to Kentucky, he earned a B.A., M.A. and PhD from the University of Kentucky. While at UK and working at the Kennedy Book Store in Lexington he met the love of his life, Barbara.

Dr. Rose was a retired Political Science professor from Murray State University. He was a member of Kiwanis and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Rose; and by one half-sister, Ethel Rose Segrest.

Dr. Rose is survived by his wife, Barbara Rose of Murray, Kentucky, whom he married on May 8, 1960 in Lexington, Kentucky; one daughter, Cheryl Rose of Shelbyville, Kentucky; one son, Joseph Rose and wife Kimberly Marrs Rose of Towson, Maryland; four grandchildren; Hayley Rose-Day (Chris), Joseph David "JD", Jonathan, James Hunter "Kevin"; as well as three great-grandchildren, Aevry, Nora and Ella. He also leaves his best friend from childhood, James Sandlin, Frankfort Kentucky, special friend Sanda Jones, his wonderful caregivers, Jana Nightengale, Becci Walker-Paredes, Traci Wells, and Jennifer Long, and many wonderful friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Baker officiating and Traci Wells singing. Burial will follow in the Murray City Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service on March 24, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. until funeral hour at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home.
