Stewart, Tennessee

Listen to Obituary

Lauri Guin Thomas, age 55, of Stewart, TN, passed away on March 31, 2026, at St. Thomas Ascension Midtown Hospital in Nashville, TN.

Lauri was born in Columbus, Mississippi, on June 22, 1970, to Larry Guin and Nita Guin. She graduated from Calloway County High School and attended Murray State University. In the summer of 1991, she married Kevin Lane Thomas of Stewart, TN.

Tragically, in 1993, she was diagnosed as having myotonic muscular dystrophy. In spite of the progressive disease, she was able to continue a normal life for many years, raising her family and enjoying life. Eventually, the disease progressed to the point that she needed a walker and other assistance. Her health became increasingly precarious, with respiratory issues like Covid, the flu, and pneumonia being constant threats.

But, despite her declining health, she maintained her positive attitude toward life and always found the humor in events surrounding her. She laughed easily and often, and was a delight to be around and engage in conversation. Her capacity to enjoy life despite her medical problems amazed all around her.

Lauri was preceded in death by her mother, Nita Johnson Guin, of Murray, KY.

She is survived by her husband, Kevin Lane Thomas; one son, Patrick Thomas; one daughter, Lexie (Jacob) Cox; and three grandchildren, Trey, Nash, and Zepplyn Cox, all of Stewart, TN. She also leaves behind her father, Larry Guin, and her step-mother, Betty Guin, of Murray, KY; and two sisters, Kacey Guin of Tacoma, WA, and Ashlee (Bryan) Hopkins of Murray, KY. Special thanks also go out to her loving caregiver, Danyelle Barton.

J.H. Churchill Funeral Home in Murray, Kentucky, is in charge of her cremation. At this time, no public services are planned, although a small, family-oriented memorial service may be held later.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association at www.mda.org.
