Mr. Lubie Lee Veal, Jr., 86, of Neale Trail, Murray, KY, died Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 1:14 a.m. at the Murray Calloway Co. Hospital. Mr. Veal was born in Murray, KY on August 17, 1924 to the late Lube L. Veal, Sr. and Charity Hart Veal.
Mr. Veal was and served as the turf superintendent for the Chicago Cubs and previously for the Cincinnati Reds, Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, and the Atlanta Braves. Mr. Veal was an Army Veteran of WWII and a member of the First Christian Church in Murray.
In addition to his parents Mr. Veal was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Gretchen Whelchel, as well as one sister, Jane Williams.
Mr. Veal is survived by one son, Lubie L. “Chip” Veal, III and wife Peggy of New Concord, KY, one sister, Virginia Foster of Clearwater, FL, son in law, Mark Whelchel of Louisville, KY, three grandchildren, Ginger Christie and husband Andrew of Evansville, IN, Jeremy Whelchel of New York City, New York, and Joshua Whelchel of Cincinnati, OH, as well as two great grandchildren, Taylor and Braedon Christie both of Evansville, IN.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, August, 22, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Christian in Murray with Pastor Ruth Ragovin officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home. There will also be visitation held from 2:00 p.m. until funeral hour on Sunday at the First Christian Church. Burial will follow services at the Murray City Cemetery.
