Mrs. Margery Shown, 82, of Murray, KY, died Wednesday, October 06, 2010 at 5:47 p.m. at her home after an extended illness.
Mrs. Shown was born in Hopkinsville, KY on January 30, 1928 to the late Warner L. and Mabel Hurt Thomas. Mrs. Shown was a retired music teacher, starting her teaching career at Bagdad High School in Bagdad, KY, she also taught at Morehouse High School in Morehouse, Mo, taught voice at Murray State University and later taught at the University School in Murray, KY. Mrs. Shown retired in 1987 from the Calloway Co. School System, as the music teacher at South West Elementary School. During her life Mrs. Shown also gave private piano lessons from her home.
Mrs. Shown graduated from Murray State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and her Masters in Elementary Education as well as receiving her Rank 1 Certification in Elementary Education. Prior to Murray State University, Mrs. Shown attended Bethel College in Hopkinsville, KY as well as graduating from Hopkinsville High School.
Mrs. Shown was a member of the First Baptist Church in Murray, were she was a member of the Phebian Sunday School Class and an active member of the choir. Mrs. Shown was a 50 year member of the Murray Woman’s Club, were she held various offices and served as the former choral director for the Music Department.
In addition to her parents Mrs. Shown was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon E. Shown, who died Dec. 30, 1998.
Mrs. Shown is survived by one daughter, Carolyn E. Shown of Murray, two sons, Timothy E. Shown and wife Mary of Louisville, KY and Thomas E. Shown and wife Melissa of Murray, as well as three grandchildren, Phoebe Elizabeth Shown of Murray, Jackson Willis Shown and Allyson Lacy Shown both of Louisville, KY.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 10, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home with John Dale officiating. Burial to follow in the Murray City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Saturday, October 9, 2010 also at the funeral home.
