Mr. Dennis L. Johnson

Dennis L. Johnson, age 80, of Murray, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Dawson Springs Health & Rehab. He was born on February 17, 1946, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to the late Fay Arnold Johnson and Violet Granstrom Johnson.

After earning music degrees from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University, Dennis began a distinguished career in 1968 as a band director in Michigan public schools, the Interlochen Arts Academy, and Western Illinois University. In 1985, he became the Director of Bands and Orchestras at Murray State University, a position he held for 33 years until his retirement in 2018 as Professor Emeritus. Under his leadership, the MSU Wind Ensemble earned national and international acclaim, performing at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the College Band Directors National Association conventions, and the International Wind Band Conference in Manchester, England. The MSU Symphony Orchestra also performed at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall in conjunction with a Kentucky Educational Television/PBS documentary. Throughout his tenure at MSU, he proudly commissioned nine new works for wind band.

Internationally respected as a conductor, educator, clinician, and advocate for wind band music, Dennis served as President of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) from 2001 to 2005. In 2002, he was inducted into the American Bandmasters Association (ABA), an honor of which he was especially proud. Through his leadership in prominent organizations—including ASBDA, NBA, CBDNA, KMEA, Phi Mu Alpha, and Phi Beta Mu—he became a leading voice in music education and conducting.

Dennis’s influence extended far beyond Kentucky through an extraordinary career of guest conducting, teaching, and adjudicating. He conducted honor bands, orchestras, and professional ensembles, and presented clinics across Canada, Colombia, Bolivia, Argentina, Taiwan, Singapore, Sweden, Ireland, Australia, Korea, Japan, Italy, and numerous other European nations. He also served as a clinician and music director for numerous World Projects festivals, leading events in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Sydney, and Honolulu at prestigious venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center. His international work included guest conducting appearances with the Sydney Youth Wind Orchestra, the Air Self-Defense Force Band of Japan, and the Korean Wind Band Festival, among others.

Perhaps his greatest professional legacy is found in the thousands of students, young conductors, and music educators he mentored and inspired through five decades of university teaching, guest conducting, and lifelong encouragement. His impact will continue for generations through the countless people he taught, guided, and believed in.

Beyond the awards and accomplishments, Dennis was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and caring friend. He loved telling stories, his friends, golf and dark beer in a glass. He was an artist and educator whose kindness and generosity deeply touched the lives of so many. He leaves behind not only an extraordinary musical legacy, but a lasting human one as well.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Bernadine Morey, and two brothers, Roland Johnson and Ronald Johnson.

Survivors include his wife Renay (Randy) Raymor Johnson, to who he was married on October 23, 1976, in Muskegon, Michigan; daughter, Erika Johnson Mehta and husband Jay of Murray, Kentucky; son Reid D. Johnson of Murray, Kentucky; grandchildren Marli Mehta and Benjamin Mehta of Murray, Kentucky; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Celebration of life for Dennis will be on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 2pm at St, John’s Episcopal Church, Murray, KY.
