Mr. Jon L. Liljequist

Mr. Jon L. Liljequist, age 90, of Mayfield, Kentucky, passed away Friday, August 28, 2026, at his home.

Mr. Liljequist was born on April 24, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Leon and Muriel Staples Liljequist. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Lisa Liljequist; one son, Lars Liljequist.

Mr. Liljequist retired from the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle where he was a Professor in the College of Art and Architecture. He was twice voted by the student body to receive the silver circle award for his excellence in teaching. Mr. Liljequist received his bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering from the University of Illinois and his Juris Doctorate from Loyola University in Chicago. He worked as a patent attorney in addition to his teaching duties. Mr. Liljequist, himself, held several patents and was always creating and inventing.

In retirement, he and his wife, Bonnie, lived in Sanibel, Florida, in the house he designed, for over 30 years. They belonged to the Sanibel Community Church. Mr. Liljequist was very active in the Sanibel community. His work helped to preserve the causeway islands, earning him the citizen of the year award in 2000. He was also an integral part of the committee that amended the Sanibel charter preserving the beauty and character of Sanibel, earning him a second citizen of the year award in 2005. They relocated to Mayfield, Kentucky several years ago, joining other family members in the area.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Ann Barrow Liljequist of Mayfield, Kentucky, married on August 20, 1960, in Mt. Prospect, Illinois; one daughter, Laura Liljequist of Murray, Kentucky; also, four grandchildren (Jeremy Murdock, Karl Murdock, Gunnar Liljequist and Hank Fronza) and three great grandchildren. Those who loved him will remember him for his ability to sing a song to fit any situation, his love for nature, his ability to think outside the box, and his entrepreneurial spirit.

A memorial service will be held at the Trinity Church of Hickory, Kentucky at 2:00 p.m., on October 3, 2026.
