Mr. Walter “Wally” Newton, age 81, of Hazel, Kentucky, formerly of Harrison, Michigan, passed away Monday, May 4, 2026, at Spring Creek Health Care in Murray, Kentucky.

Mr. Newton was born on August 9, 1946, in Highland Park, Michigan to the late John A. Newton and Clara (Strokise) Newton. He retired from the Murray-Calloway County Hospital as a Maintenance Janitor and proudly served his country as a Vietnam Army Veteran where he was a POW, “Prisoner of War”. Mr. Newton was of the Baptist Faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Janice (Cathey) Newton; two stepchildren, Timmy and Charles Cathey; as well as one step-grandson, Austin Morrison.

Survivors include three stepchildren, John Cathey (Paula) of Lexington, Kentucky, Lydia Cathey of Murray, Kentucky, and Amanda Cathey (Duke) of Almo, Kentucky; one daughter, Annete Vanttook (Shane) of Georgia; one son, Michael Newton of Georgia; as well as 11 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Special thanks to grandson, Bradley Cathey, for always being there and the faculty and staff at Spring Creek Healthcare.

A public memorial graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 11, 2026, at the Lone Oak Cemetery in Calloway County, Kentucky. Burial will follow. There will be no public visitation held prior to the public memorial graveside service.
