Phyllis Dale Gibbs of Lynn Grove, Kentucky, passed away Monday morning, April 30, 2017, at Baptist Health Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky. She died of complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
She was 74 and the daughter of Mavis Manning Gibbs and Fred Dale Gibbs, who preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Gary Gibbs of New York City; a sister, Sondra Gibbs Rush of Murray; and a nephew, Eric Denton of Louisville.
Ms. Gibbs is survived by her son, Benjamin Austin Underwood Jr. of Lynn Grove; her siblings, Nancy Dale Becker of New York City, Mitchell Gibbs, Charles Gibbs and Alan Gibbs, all of Murray; her niece, Nancy Ellison Merritt of Carmel, Indiana, and her uncle Don Gibbs of Murray.
Ms. Gibbs was a graduate of Murray State University and moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where she lived and worked for General Electric as director of customer service. She retired in 1990 and moved to Lynn Grove for the remainder of her life. Ms. Gibbs was an active member and supporter of the National Alliance of Mental Health, and the National Democratic Party, where she worked as a volunteer in the Murray office.
In addition, she was a talented genealogist and a member of the American Genealogical Society. Her hobby was gardening.
The J.H. Churchill Funeral Home is in charge of a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, in Murray City Cemetery. Friends of the family are invited.
