Mrs. Ruth C. Bailey, age 94, of Murray, Kentucky died Friday, March 09, 2018 at the Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky.
Mrs. Bailey was born to the late Lonnie Cathey and Bertia (Spiceland) Cathey on June 10, 1923 in Copperhill, Tennessee, and spent her childhood in the Land Between the Rivers. Mrs. Bailey was a retired elementary school teacher. She taught in Illinois, Michigan and Maryland. While living in Maryland Mrs. Bailey was recognized as "Miss 1st Grade" and volunteered many hours at a nursing home in the community in which she resided. During WWII Mrs. Bailey was a supervisor at Oak Ridge. Before moving from Murray Mrs. Bailey was employed by Dr. Titsworth while she was attending Murray State University and where she later graduated. After her retirement and moving back to Murray Mrs. Bailey volunteered at Murray Elementary for many years. Mrs. Bailey was an avid traveler and quilter. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Phebian Sunday School Class.
In addition to her parents Mrs. Bailey was preceded in death by her husband, Elva Bailey; one son, Joseph Bailey; one sister, Evelyn Lockhart; one brother, Gene Cathey; one niece, Sharon McDonald; as well as a sister-in-law, Jo Cathey.
Mrs. Bailey is survived by one sister, Shirley Toon and husband Bob of Murray, Kentucky; one brother, J.W. Cathey; a sister-in-law, Marilyn McCuiston; nieces, Kathy Domescik-Adams, Phyllis McKenna, Shara Olivier and Mitzi Cathey; nephews, Monty Cathey, Mike Cathey and Larry Lockhart.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home with John Dale and Kevin Gaunce officiating. Entombment will follow in the Murray City Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service on Sunday, March 18, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. – until service hour at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be Larry Lockhart, Dave McKenna, Mike Oliver, Mike Cathey, Monty Cathey and Bret Looney. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Toon, Connor McKenna, Alex Adams, Ryan Domescik, Mike Davidson, Nancy Davidson, Stephen Olivier and employees of the Oakview Nursing Home.
