Dr. Samuel Vaughan Duvall, 90, died on January 24, 2015 at his home in Murray, Kentucky.
Sam was born August 19, 1924, in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Samuel R. and Carey Duvall. Sam served in the Army Air Corps as a sergeant in the 382nd Air Service group. He was an airplane mechanic as a part of the military aircraft repair efforts and flew "Over the Hump" in the China Burma India Theater during World War II. As a part of his ROTC service as a college dental student, he met his wife, Betty, an Army Nurse, at Percy Jones Army Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan. He was a graduate from the University Of Louisville School Of Dentistry. In 1951, he married Betty Lumm in Detroit, Michigan, and then later moved to Fruitport, Michigan to raise his family of three children and practice dentistry in Muskegon, Michigan. In 1976, the family moved to Murray, Kentucky where he continued his dentistry until 1980. He continued his career as a dentist practicing at Larned State Psychiatric Facility in Larned, Kansas and Migrant Workers Dental Clinic in Bangor, Michigan until his retirement. Sam continued caring for creatures great and small as he loved to garden, trap squirrels out of his bird feeders, fill "cavities" of diseased trees, and care for his wife.
Sam is survived by his wife and their children, Joanne Ellis Duvall, Marianne Scott and husband Roger all of Murray, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Eric Ellis and wife Miranda of New Iberia, Louisiana and Emily Scott of Murray, Kentucky. He is preceded in death by his son, Paul Duvall, who died in 1965, and his sister, Margaret Duvall.
A private graveside service will be held in Fruitport, Michigan at a later date.
