Sherrill Ronald Hicks

Sherrill Ronald Hicks, 74, of Murray, Kentucky, died Saturday, May 27th, 2017, at Murray-Calloway County Hospital in Murray.
He was born January 15th, 1943, in Murray, Kentucky, to Carlos Hicks and Lellie Edwards Hicks.

Mr. Hicks was retired from Murray State University's Facilities Management department. He was also a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church in Murray.
Mr. Hicks is survived by his wife, Janis Southard Hicks of Murray, whom he married on October 28th, 1966; one daughter, Ginger Hicks Hearn and husband Daniel of Nashville, Tennessee; one son, Adam Kent Hicks of Murray; one sister, Alice Hicks Lord of Murray; one brother-in-law, Dale Southard of Murray; and one sister-in-law, Linda Southard Gamertsfelder and husband Roger of Huber Heights, Ohio.

Mr. Hicks was a 1961 graduate of Murray College High School, where he was active in the school orchestra, band and choral group. His wife, Janis, first became interested in him when he was a vocal soloist in a school musical, which was performed back then in the Little Chapel (now known as Wrather Hall Auditorium.) In his youth and as a young adult, Mr. Hicks was also the song leader at Locust Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member.

Mr. Hicks once owned a red and white '56 Chevy, and often engaged in unapproved drag racing along with other friends during the early 1960's. Occasionally, their names would be listed in the local paper, along with fines and court costs – if the law ever caught up with them. Mr. Hicks was also a long time fan of NASCAR racing.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 31st, 2017, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Murray City Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 30th, 2017, and again at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31st, 2017 up until the time of the service.
