Mrs. Maria Soledad Vara-Rust, age 85, of Lima, Peru passed away peacefully in the morning of Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at the Murray-Calloway County Hospital in Murray, Ky.
She was born on Feb 21, 1935 in Lima, Peru. Her father, a senator, was a founding member of the Socialist Movement of Peru and fought for indigenous rights. Her mother was a talented seamstress.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Rust; daughter, Solita Haggerty; son, Charles Rust Jr.; son in law, Stephen Haggerty; granddaughter, Maya Chamberlain; and grandson, Joseph Haggerty. She is preceded in death by her son, Michael Rust, whose ashes will be buried with her.
Mrs. Vara-Rust was a retired professor of Spanish Literature from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She was a beloved member of St. Leo's Catholic Church.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at St. Leo's Catholic Church with Father Brandon officiating. Burial will follow at the Murray City Cemetery.
