Mr. Virris D. (Vic) Vickers Jr. of Murray passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 16, 2010, at his home after an extended illness.
Vic was born July 7th, 1935 in Cookeville, Tennessee, to Virris D. and Nancy Sarah (Curtis) Vickers. On October 22, 1959 in Detroit, Michigan he married Hazel G. McClard. They were the parents of two daughters and were happily married for 49 ½ years when he lost his wife in 2009.
Mr. Vickers served in the United States Army.
Mr. Vickers was a retired Murray business man. He was co-owner of McClard’s Shell Station and Towing Service at 6th and Main Street. This location was opened in April 1961 and remained in operation as one of Murray’s only “Full Service” stations for thirty-six years until July 26, 1997 when they closed their doors and relocated the towing business to 7th street. After his retirement he enjoyed devoting his time to his favorite hobbies of following UK basketball and Detroit Tigers baseball.
Mr. Vickers was ordained in 1970 at Sugar Creek Baptist Church and a received his A.A. degree from Mid-Continent Bible College, Mayfield. He was an active member of Westside Baptist Church, a teacher in the Adult Men’s Sunday school class and was past outreach worship leader for Fern Terrace Lodge.
In addition to his wife, Vic was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Mary Ellen Vickers Scott.
Mr. Vickers leaves to cherish his memory two daughters: S. Leigh Vickers Angle and husband, Michael, Mississippi; and Shelia M. Haley, Murray. He was a dear brother to Robert Vickers Sr. and wife Mitsu of Burke, VA., and Charles W. Vickers, Eastpointe, MI. He was a loving grandfather to four grandsons, Jordan K. Gray of Murray, Joshua T. and Brandan V. Gray of Mississippi, and Austin Drew Haley and one great grandson Kayden, both of Murray. Also surviving are his former business partner and brother-in-law Joseph Mc Clard and son-in-law Brad Haley; two aunts, seven nieces and three nephews. His passing will be mourned by a host of friends and extended family, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
J. H. Churchill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The funeral will be September 18, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of J. H. Churchill Funeral Home. The Reverends Alan Trull and Glynn Orr will officiate, with comments by Tommy Hoke. Entombment will be in Murray City Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday September 17th, 2010.
