Pastor William "Bill" Theodore Newsome, age 93, of Kirksey, Kentucky, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 31, 2016.
He was born on January 28, 1923 in Ashland, Kentucky, to the late Rev. William McKinley Newsome and Anna Springer Newsome. He was a retired Free Will Baptist Minister for over 40 years, Pastoring churches in Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Tennessee. He proudly served his country aboard the U.S.S. General SD Sturgis AP137 during WWII in the pacific conflict going almost completely around the world to keep America safe. He was present on VJ day September 2, 1945 in Tokyo Bay at the signing of the peace treaty. He was also a Kentucky Colonel.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by beloved wife, Violet Newsome; two sisters, Francis McCage, and Opal Mitchell; two brothers, Russell Newsome, and Tvis Henry Newsome.
He was a loving father, and grandfather, surviving are two daughters, Sharon Collings and husband Don of Middletown, Maryland, Pamela Newsome of Kirksey, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Dr. Donald Collings and wife Mary of Beaver, Pennsylvania, Stacy Collings of Wilmington, Delaware, Stephanie Best and husband Joe of Boonesburg, Maryland, and Robert Collings of Middletown, Maryland; ten great grandchildren, Jordan, Hannah, Caleb, Peter, Elizabeth, Samuel, and Havilah Collings all of Beaver, Pennsylvania, Caroline and Josephine Collings of Middletown, Maryland, and Joseph Best of Boonesburg, Maryland.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 4, 2016 at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home. Pastor Curt Swick will officiate, and burial with full military honors will be at the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, November 3, 2016 from 5-8 p.m. at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home.
