William F. Ruby

November 13, 1924 — February 14, 2015

William "Bill" F. Ruby of Murray, Kentucky passed away February 14, 2015 at home.

He is the oldest son of Carl and Margaret Ruby. Born 1924 in Cambridge, Ohio. He grew up in the depression years. In his words: "I started with nothing, my childhood was great but we had very little."

This spring his wife and children will carry his ashes "home" to New Concord, Ohio. At that time a gathering of friends and family will be held to celebrate his life. Notification will be posted in the Jeffersonian and New Concord Leader newspaper. A private burial will be held at Highland Township Cemetery located in Bloomfield, Ohio.

Bill Graduated from New Concord High School in 1942. He served in the Marine Corp. (rank: PFC) from 1943 – 1946 in the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He was a WWII Veteran. Graduated from Muskingum College in 1950. While at Muskingum he participated on the basketball team (center). He led the nation in field goal percentage his senior year. He was invited to try out with the New York Knicks.

Bill's success in basketball earned an induction into the Muskingum College Hall of Fame (1985) and the John Glenn High School Hall of Fame (2010).

In 1950 Mr. Ruby began his career with Goodyear retiring 36 years later in 1986. He worked in middle management at the Goodyear plants in Akron, OH North Chicago, IL and Norfolk, NE.

He proudly raised his family in Libertyville, IL. Bill, Nancy and children enjoyed many fond memories and friendships of Hanlon and Heathercliff Road.

They retired and moved to Murray, KY in 1988. He also owned a small piece of property on Shoemaker Road. He loved his "little garden".

Dad always had a story or memory to share with his dry, engaging sense of humor. His fondest memories though were his marriage to his wife Nancy and the birth of his two children.

William is survived by his loving wife, of 62 years, Nancy Shields Ruby; son, David and daughter, Diane; siblings, Dorothy Morrow and Marge Gladstone; brother-in-laws, Melvin Shields, John Shields, Don (Marilyn) Shields and sister-in-law, Glenna Mae (Dana) Pauley; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. We also wish to acknowledge the wonderful lifetime friendships from his childhood, service, career and retirement years.

Mr. Ruby is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Mae Ruby Douglas; brother, Gene (Cecelia) Ruby; sister, Mary Joan Marvin; brother-in-laws, Roy Shields, Jimmy Shields, Clyde (Ethel) Shields, Mary Shields, Glendale (Nora) Shields, and Bill (Helen) Shields.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to your local American Legion Program on behalf of William F. Ruby.

The J.H. Churchill Funeral Home in Murray, KY is in charge of local arrangements.
