Zee Enix, 95, died November 10, 2018, at the Calloway-County Hospital. Zee was born in Harlan county and raised in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky.
After serving the Army during WWII, Zee attended Aviation School in Texas. He married Martha Stidham in 1946 and they moved to Murray in 1950. Zee and Martha opened Enix Interiors, a quality furniture and interior design store on Chestnut Street. Upon their retirement after 35 years in business they sold the building to Chuck Wynn who still operates Paglia's Pizza at that location.
Zee was involved in many civic organizations. Zee became a staunch Democrat when he met a man named Wendell Ford in 1955. They met in the Junior Jaycees. He and Mr. Ford became good friends and Zee was instrumental in getting Wendell Ford elected Governor and later U.S. Senator. Through Governor Ford and other governors Zee became known as "Mr. Democrat" of Calloway County and a contact person for the governor's office.
Zee never used his political clout to help himself. He was proud of the many young people he secured jobs for at Kenlake State Park. He was responsible for helping many people get jobs in State government and he secured millions of dollars for Calloway County roads and other projects including the airport through his Frankfort connections. He was also a mentor for many young people that were considering entering politics as a public service.
Zee was appointed over the years by seven governors to serve on the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway Authority. He testified before Congress to support funding for the advancement of river commerce from Kentucky Dam to the Gulf of Mexico. Zee and Martha were generous people over the years supporting many local charities and organizations.
After Martha's death in 2017, Zee made substantial contributions to the Anna Mae Owens Hospice House and the Calloway County Humane Society in the name of his beloved wife of 71 years.
